Homi Jehangir Bhabha
India has gained global reputation in the field of space research in recent times. However, do you know who played key role in the birth of the Indian space research programme? Yes, you are right. It was by Homi J. Bhabha (30 October 1909 to 24 January 1966). Not only this, this prominent physicist is also widely regarded as the ‘father of the Indian nuclear programme’ too. He was the founding Director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). Awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1954, he was also the first Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission.
Vikram Sarabhai
A physicist, astronomer, industrialist and visionary, Vikram Sarabhai (12 August 1919 – 30 December 1971), was a multifaceted personality. There are 2 areas that immediately come to mind when this genius’ name is mentioned – space and nuclear research. Not for nothing is he widely regarded as the ‘Father of Indian space program’. He was the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India (1966-71).
